![]() ![]() This is confusing and doesn't make any sense at all. How Microsoft is handling natural voices isn't consistent, and it's application-specific, not system-wide, despite making use of control panels. Control panels are supposed to expose system-wide settings. It's insane for there to be a separate control panel where you can install a natural voice for Narrator, but only Narrator. At least this is system-wide, and it's where you should be able to install natural voices system-wide, but you can't! There's a Time & language→Speech control panel where you can install additional voices, but only the garbled unnatural ones. This isn't how natural voices work, however. When you install a new one, it's not just Microsoft Word that has access to it, but all applications, system-wide. Or are the storage or computational requirements too much for a device such as a Surface Pro to handle?Ĭonsider fonts. I know that Microsoft is trying to monetize natural voices, but if so, why expose them to Microsoft Edge without requiring users to pay? I also understand that the processing is done in the cloud, and that cloud resources aren't free, which leads me to wonder whether it's practical for natural voice processing to be done on a local computer. Will natural voices ever be made available to third-party apps? If so, when? If not, why not? Is there any hack to Windows that can be done that would expose Microsoft Natural Voices to third-party apps? The problem is that third-party apps, such as the epub reader, Starrea, only have access to the built-in, very unnatural voices in Windows, such as "Microsoft David - English (United States)." None of these third-party apps can use the best voices for turning text into an audiobook. For example, the "Microsoft Guy (Online) Eng" natural voice is fantastic! This is fantastic for listening to books. Microsoft Edge has the ability to read aloud PDF files that are opened within it. Hide Flairs Show Flairs Hide Help Posts.Need help with a post?
